Expanding cooperation in Digital Government in ASEAN

- Ministry to dispatch the delegation on  digital government cooperation to Laos and Cambodia from September 1 to 5 -

□ Going forward, cooperation in digital government between Korea and ASEAN countries, such as Laos and Cambodia, is expected to be expanded.

□ The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) dispatches a ‘Delegation on Digital Government Cooperation,’ headed by Vice Minister Han Chang-Seob, to Laos and Cambodia from September 1 (Thu) to September 5 (Mon).

 ○ The delegation is joined by several public organizations, including KOMSCO (Korea Minting, Security Printing & ID Card Operating Corp), KEIS (Korea Employment Information Service), KLID (Korea Local Information Research & Development Institute), and NIA (National Information Society Agency).

 ○ To support the advancement of Korea’s digital government, which is highly recognized by the international community in developing countries, the MOIS has been driving various programs, such as the dispatch of delegations and invitational training

□ In Laos, Vice Minister HAN will meet Santisouk Simmalavong, Vice Minister of Technology and Communications of Laos, to sign an MOU on cooperation in the digital government and discuss the path forward to establish a Korea-Laos Digital Government Cooperation Center with the Ministry of Technology and Communications of Laos.

 ○ In addition, the delegation will hold a seminar to share the latest trends in digital government activities in both countries. At the seminar, speakers will introduce the best practices of the Korean digital government to Lao government officials and experts in charge of digital government and identify the developments of the Lao digital government initiative.

□ In Cambodia, Vice Minister HAN will hold bilateral talks with Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, to review the progress and achievements of the Korea-Cambodia Digital Government Cooperation Center established in 2021 and discuss the path forward to expand cooperation further.

□ To further navigate this topic, the MOIS and the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications of Cambodia will hold a ‘Korea-Cambodia Digital Government Cooperation Forum’ on September 5 (local time 9 AM). 

 ○ The forum will feature about 200 participants, including government officials in charge of the digital government scheme from the central and local governments and experts from industry, academia, and research. 

 ○ Under the themes of Government 24, Digitalization of Local Government Information, Employment Information System, and Mobile ID card, the forum will focus on discussing the path forward for the Cambodian digital government referring to the model of the Korean digital government. 

□ Also, the delegation will visit the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training that adopted the employment information system of Korea from 2018 to 2021 under the Korea-Cambodia Cooperation Project, to inspect the said system and discuss potential needs for cooperation.

□ Vice Minister of the Interior and Safety HAN Chang-Seob commented that “By expanding partnership in the digital government with Laos and Cambodia who are the key cooperation partners in ASEAN, the Ministry will support the Korean digital platform government to lead the world and lay a foundation for Korean companies to enter into overseas markets”. 

Vice Minister Han gave the opening remarks at the bilateral meeting with the Minister of Technology and Communications of Laos on 1st September.

Vice Minister Han had a bilateral meeting with the Minister Chea Vandeth to discuss the bilateral cooperation including the digital government cooperation center on September 5.
